Slipping away from the mixer, just as our lies were crumbling, Fitz and I locked ourselves in a single-occupant bathroom, where we cleaned our hair and faces—and my blazer and his shirt—in the sink, before we began using the hot air of the hand dryer on them, which was taking forever.

“This was a dumb idea,” I said quietly.

“It wasn’t,” Fitz said. “It was fun.”

“You were having fun?”

“I was before drinks were thrown on us, which was my fault.”

“The beer guy was my father’s fault.”

“The beer guy might not have thrown a drink at you if he hadn’t gotten inspiration from my guy.”

I didn’t like how I felt when he called Samuel my guy. “Were you and he…involved once?”

“We were.”

“And why did he find that so upsetting?”

“He’s upset because I banned him from Club Atlas.”

“Because you stopped sleeping with him?”

Fitz, grunting with displeasure, gave up on drying his shirt and pulled the damp garment on over his head. “Because I got him into a great graduate program, and he was throwing that opportunity away so he could party all the time and be the sugar baby of selfish bastards—who didn’t care that he was throwing his life away, or that he was getting hooked on designer drugs.”

“Does, uh, stuff like that happen a lot with club members?” I asked, as I tried to keep my eyes on his face, but they kept slipping down to where his damp shirt hugged his muscles.

“I wouldn’t say…a lot.”

“But it’s not…unusual?”

Fitz rested his back against the bathroom door and stared up at the ceiling. “There are a lot of powerful, wealthy, older Atlas members and some not-powerful, not-wealthy, young Atlas members. What do you think?”

“I think… I’m going to try very hard to not make pre-judgments before I experience the club for myself.” Although, if I was being honest, most of what I had heard about it made me reluctant to join the very secretive organization.

On paper, queer people coming together to advance their movement, uplift each other, and protect their own seemed like it would be an awesome club. One that wouldn’t have any downsides for someone like me, who didn’t have to worry about being hurt in any way if people found out I was a member.

But when the New York elite are part of something, you can count on there being some shady shit going on, and you have to take the good with the bad. The bad usually being people like my reformed-con-man father, or selfish bastards who used young men who were hooked on designer drugs. And, unless I had to for work, I really didn’t want to rub elbows with those people. And I really, really didn’t want to get spanked in front of them.

“Thank you for being open to that,” Fitz said. “You’ll learn a lot from a trial membership, which is what we can start you off with, so you won’t have to participate in any club activities. You can just shadow me.”

I shrugged off his gratitude, not wanting to say anything that would give him false hope that I would join Atlas.
